Option 1 — Coach to Mersing then ferry
Catch an overnight coach from Singapore (Queen Street, Beach Road, or Lavender) to Mersing terminal. Operators: Causeway Link, Transtar. Total bus time 5-6 hours including border. Ferry from Mersing to Tioman 1.5-2 hours. Best for budget travellers willing to do an overnight journey.
Option 2 — Coach to Tanjung Gemok then speedboat (fastest)
Direct coaches go from Singapore to Tanjung Gemok jetty (Endau), Pahang. Travel time 4-5 hours. Then a 1.5-hour speedboat to Tioman with TDB SunBeach's preferred operator. Total time door-to-door: 6-7 hours. See Tanjung Gemok speedboat guide.
Option 3 — KTM ETS + bus + ferry
Train from Woodlands or JB Sentral to Kluang on KTM ETS. From Kluang, transfer to a local bus to Mersing (~1.5 hours). Then ferry to Tioman. Comfortable but slowest; preferred by train enthusiasts and those wanting a daytime journey.
Border crossing tips
Use the Causeway (Woodlands) for buses headed north. Second Link (Tuas) is less congested but adds 30 min. Submit your MDAC (Malaysia Digital Arrival Card) online within 72 hours of arrival — free, mandatory. Have RM cash on hand for jetty fees.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fly to Tioman?
Not in 2026. Tioman Airport closed for runway upgrades. Reopening dates have been repeatedly pushed back; assume no flights.
Is there a direct ferry from Singapore?
No. All routes pass through a Malaysian jetty (Mersing or Tanjung Gemok). The 'direct from Singapore' coach options simply skip stopovers but still terminate at a Malaysian port.
How much cash should I bring?
RM 200-300 minimum for jetty fees, marine park fee (RM 30), incidentals, and ATM-light Tioman. Resorts accept card; small cafes and tuk-tuks don't.
